Things That Worked

  • The "Crown" bag: I put all the loose things that normally go into the bottom of the x-ray scanner tray into the bag. That speeds up the security process and removes the worry about forgetting some little thing.
  • After security, when you're distributing things BACK into your pockets (etc) also remove from your bag things you normally need/want during flight - In my case that's my camera (to photograph food and idiots) and contac lens stuff (for long flights)
  • If you have a long layover, pack your phone charger for easy access -if you see an available outlet, go for it. (you want a fully charged phone -for GPS - available when you land)
  • "Spy" Sunglasses -available on-line for $40 - work better than expected
  • toandfromtheairport.com worked. About 5 Taxi drivers told me the train to town was broken/cancelled/etc - I waited; the train still (slowly) runs
  • Kodi/YouTube both work
  • Knowing how to read some Cyrillic
  • There's a small Cyrillic sign way over there. Zoom in w camera. Take pic. In "review" mode, zoom in farther. Use translator app in smartphone to "read" the sign via the camera display.

Things that Failed

  • I forgot to make a copy/ photo of the info pages of my passport
  • Need hand-lotion/ chapstick for 12-hour flight
  • BUY the big bottle of water - they never serve enough
  • Look up exchange rates for long lay-overs
  • Make sure ALL credit/ debit/ ATM cards are activated and you know the PIN
  • Check electric plug model for all anticipated countries
  • Do NOT switch to new shoes the day of the flight
  • Do NOT drop your new "Spy" Sunglasses (Twice) they are flimsy and will no longer record audio
  • Don't try to buy a SIM/Phone without your passport readily available - they'll want to see it (Don't have it hidden down your pants like I did)
